5 Social Enterprises that Help Survivors of Human Trafficking Create a New Start

“If you have come here to help me, you are wasting your time. But if you have come because your liberation is bound up with mine, then let us work together.”

-Lilla Watson

Advocacy can take many shapes. There are individuals that use their platform, those that use their art, many tell stories through documentaries, and so on. I myself desire to make the topic of human trafficking more of a common discussion in the media and among households. Sometimes it feels small, however, I have to believe that we are all a cog in the machine; we each play a part.

What we buy, matters. Therefore, I want to dedicate this article to 5 different brands that support the fight against human trafficking, more specifically, these brands help survivors reintegrate back into society and start a new life. I’ve also included a favorite pick or two down below.

Sudara

Sudara is a benefit corporation that exists to advocate on behalf of and empower women who have escaped from, or at the highest risk of, human trafficking by providing dignified employment opportunities. We are a mission-driven lifestyle brand whose success is not just measured or defined in sales and revenue, but in our positive social impact and creating long-term, sustainable change. Their shop includes clothing for all areas of life, from fitness gear to pajamas.

Good Paper

The mission at Good Paper is to restore the human spirit. To restore the humanity and beauty within each of us that gets so easily forgotten and tossed aside. They start with our cardmakers - women who have escaped sex trafficking in the Philippines and young adults orphaned by disease in Rwanda. They provide cards for every occasion.

Destiny Rescue

Destiny Rescue is an internationally recognized Christian non-profit organization dedicated to rescuing children enslaved in the sex trade. They work on virtually every continent with hundreds of employees and volunteers dedicated to their mission. They exist to see child sexual slavery end in our lifetime. As long as sex-trafficking and child sexual exploitation exist in our world, they will continue to fight and be advocates on behalf of the enslaved and vulnerable. Every purchase helps fund the vital work of Destiny Rescue - both in providing safe, sustainable employment for the girls they rescue and by helping them to continue their efforts to be a voice for the voiceless.

Elegantees

Elegant Tees is an ethically cut and sewn fashion brand that partners with an organization that rescues over 20,000 women and children from sex trafficking a year in Nepal. Elegantees then offers employment to many women the nonprofit serves. By opening their sewing center in Nepal, they found a way to give rescued women meaningful work with a fair wage. One can clearly see through their style and design that the people behind the brand are united front to support and empower women.

Thistle Farms

Thistle Farms' mission is to HEAL, EMPOWER, AND EMPLOY women survivors of trafficking, prostitution, and addiction. They do this by providing safe and supportive housing, the opportunity for economic independence, and a strong community of advocates and partners. Residents of Thistle Farm go through a two-year restorative program based in Nashville, Tennessee which provides housing, medical care, therapy, education, and job training free of charge for up to 32 women and serves hundreds more with advocacy and referral services.

From there, residents and graduates can take up employment from either the natural body and home product company, the Café or Thistle Farms Global within the organization. The organization is founded on the philosophy, that love is the most powerful force for change in the world.

WTA Selects
01. I am a big lounger around my apartment. And when I’m writing, I need the right setting and to feel creative. The Anju Robe is addition to my routine.

02. I’ve never been your conventional hallmark card-giver. Therefore, I’m always keeping an eye out for the right card, for the letter receiver intended. Good Paper gives a unique twist to the old-fashioned snail mail, and tells a story in and of itself with their mission. Looking forward to handing out Christmas cards to my family with the Assorted Holiday Boxed Set. #HandsignedByItsMaker

03. Destiny Rescue has a great selection of jewelry, but my eye kept gravitating towards the Sunny Bracelet. I actually think that both men and women could rock this piece, which would make a perfect gift for anyone.

04. Peplum. That’s all. Check out this JULIA peplum tee in Ginger.

05. My room is where I like to spend a lot of my free time and adding a delicious scent takes everything to the next level. Adding the yummy Love Heals Every Body Soy candle in vanilla to the picks.

With Care,

WTA
